Charge those who are rich in this present world that they not be arrogant, nor have their hope set on the uncertainty of riches, but on the living God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.
–1 Timothy 6:17
The apostle Paul has given us timely advice to trust not in uncertain riches, but in the living God.
People pursue riches in hope of being fulfilled and content. But Paul says that it is better to look away from money in order to look to God, who takes pleasure in giving us all we need and more.
Money and material possessions are temporary. A person who is rich today can easily wake up tomorrow to find it has all disappeared because of falling stock prices, theft, a job that no longer exists, or even a natural disaster.
But the God we serve is not uncertain. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. The love and promises He gives last forever.
Do you want to trust in riches or trust in the Lord?
Every day, you have the choice to serve either money or God. Wealth, prosperity, and fame bring with them constant worry and uncertainty. But the peace that comes from knowing what you have with God lasts forever.
Prayer
Dear Lord, Your love makes me rich beyond measure. Help me remember that You are the source of every good thing in my life. Please help me to trust in the living God so I will know I am secure now and forever. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
Reflection
Starting today, what will I do to put my hope and trust in God instead of material wealth?
