Don’t befriend a hot-tempered man, and don’t associate with one who harbors anger: lest you learn his ways, and ensnare your soul.
–Proverbs 22:24-25

Psychologists agree: anger can cripple us emotionally, destroying relationships. Research consistently backs this up.

Anger is toxic. It erodes the foundations upon which connections are built. For instance:

Angry people tend to use war-like language. They issue threats and ultimatums to provoke: “You better watch out!” “Don’t start something you can’t finish.” “Oh, you want to go there?”

Anger often blinds people to their shortcomings. Rather than take responsibility for their actions and emotions, they blame others. “If you weren’t so stubborn…” “It wasn’t my fault…” “If she hadn’t disrespected me…”

Anger burns. It seethes. It festers. It waits, storing up resentment until it can erupt. Angry people rarely look for constructive ways to deal with the source of their anger when they are calm. Instead, they revel in their emotional fireworks.

Anger is intolerant. It refuses to consider opposing views or differences of opinion. Sometimes it shouts. Sometimes it sulks in silence. But as long as it is in charge, it never allows for reconciliation.

God knew what He was talking about when He advised His children to steer clear of angry people. But what if the angry person is me?

If you struggle with anger, remember: God knows how to defuse your rage. Surrender to Him. He alone can turn fury into faith.

Reflection

How different would my life be if I allowed God to erase all of my anger?

Prayer

Holy God, You are Love incarnate. Please make anger a stranger to me and banish it from my relationships. Fill my life with more of Your divine love. In Jesus’ dear name I pray, Amen.
