Love with His Love
A devotion on 1 John 4:9-10
By this God’s love was revealed in us, that God has sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins.
–1 John 4:9-10
We love the idea of unconditional love, but most of us don’t live it.
We too often set conditions on our love. We love those who love us. We love those who show us affection, who put up with us, those we find attractive, those who serve us and meet our needs.
But, it’s hard to love someone who doesn’t understand us. Someone who doesn’t take the time to call or text. It’s hard to love those who make us feel uncomfortable, those we can’t relate to. It’s certainly hard to love those who have hurt us.
God understands this. He knows we chose to love Him because he first loved us. But in making us His children, God then asks us to love others as He has loved. To love others unconditionally, even if they reject you, even if they never love you in return.
This is why remaining in Christ’s love is absolutely necessary. Christ’s love doesn’t just make us feel accepted. It also empowers us to love others when we would rather do otherwise.
So, the key isn’t just to love. The key is to love with His love.
Dear Loving God, Thank You for demonstrating what true love is. Thank You for loving me unconditionally and for giving me the opportunity to demonstrate Your love to others. Please fill me with Your Spirit. Let others see Jesus in me. In Jesus’ dear name I pray, Amen.
Who do I have a tough time loving unconditionally? I will pray and ask God to fill me with His love regarding this person.
