He has swallowed up death forever! The Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces. He will take the reproach of his people away from off all the earth, for the LORD has spoken it.
–Isaiah 25:8
We start life with 100 billion neurons in our brains.
Sometime in our early twenties, the neurons begin to die. At thirty-five, our lung capacity starts to shrink. Near the same time, our kidneys’ ability to filter out toxins slows.
By forty, our heart can not pump blood as efficiently as it used to and, along with that, we begin to lose more muscle than we are able to gain. It seems that by the time we’ve finally climbed Growth Mountain, we begin to slip down it again.
However, there are ways to slow the slide, such as resting well, moving more, and feeding our cells with healthy food.
And there is God.
He is the ultimate cure for our decay because He has turned our slippery slope into a bridge to heaven. He’s turned our dying bodies into healthy, happy, eternal ones. He makes death a doorway to life with Him.
So next time you marvel at your gray hairs, think of each one as a step closer to Jesus.
Reflection
How does my faith in God affect how I feel about death?
Prayer
Dear God, Help me to cling to Jesus: my redeemer, my resurrection, and my life. Thank You for wiping away my tears forever. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
