Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, and whose confidence is in the LORD. It is good that a man should hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.
–Jeremiah 17:7; Lamentations 3:26
People in the USA are known for putting their faith in their wallets.
After the tragedy of September 11, 2001, Wall Street closed the stock market, knowing that money was one of the first things people would grab in fear. Trading wasn’t reopened till September 17. Sure enough, so many people had pulled their funds from the stock market that it made the largest one day fall in US history up to that point.
Since then, the stock market has experienced precipitous drops on numerous occasions. It can’t be trusted. It may break; it may jam; it does not offer salvation. We curse ourselves when we put all our trust in it, or in anyone who manages it for us.
If you look closely at any US bill, the phrase “In God We Trust” is printed there. It’s a great reminder to us all to treat money as a tool and not a god.
If we lose it, if it’s stolen, if it’s lost in medical bills, home repairs, or the stock exchange, it is not our end. It doesn’t determine our future.
When our trust is in God, we are blessed no matter what happens to our wallet.
Reflection
What types of personal reactions sometimes reveal to me that my trust isn’t in God in certain situations?
Prayer
Gracious God, Help me to trust in You, not my finances. You are my abundant, loving God who has everything in the vast universe. Thank You for being willing to give it all to me. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
