Like a city that is broken down and without walls is a man whose spirit is without restraint.
–Proverbs 25:28
Today’s verse is both a reminder and a warning.
It reminds us that we have to be proactive in protecting our hearts and minds against the things that pull us away from God and toward sin. The “warning” part tells us that if we don’t build those walls, we’re in for trouble. Why? Because we aren’t strong enough on our own to resist the things Satan puts in our path to trip us up.
So, if you have a problem with spending too much money or swiping your credit card (spending money you don’t even have), build a wall around the mall so that you don’t drive by and see it. Block online shopping sites from your computer.
If you have a problem with alcohol, build a wall around the temptation that won’t allow you to go somewhere that serves alcohol.
Do you have a problem resisting intimacy outside of marriage? Build a wall that blocks out any opportunity for those things to happen.
Build the walls and let the Holy Spirit stand watch. He will keep you safe and protected.
He will give you the restraint you need.
Prayer
Dear God in Heaven, I thank You for the strength, courage, and wisdom You have made available to me through the Holy Spirit. I ask now that You give me the desire to call on Him to stand watch over the walls in my life. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
Reflection
How will my life be different if I build walls of restraint and let the Holy Spirit keep watch over me?
