The centurion answered, “Lord, I’m not worthy for you to come under my roof. Just say the word, and my servant will be healed. Jesus said to the centurion, “Go your way. Let it be done for you as you have believed.” His servant was healed in that hour.
–Matthew 8:8, 13
What if Jesus knocked on your door just now? Would you be embarrassed to invite Him in?
I doubt I’d be concerned about the inevitable pillows on the floor or the laundry drying all over the shower curtain. But I think I’d immediately worry about what my children were saying to one another.
Too often my home feels unworthy of God’s presence. Like the centurion in today’s verse, I’d say, “Lord, I’m not worthy for you to come under my roof.”
Perhaps that isn’t such a bad attitude.
Jesus didn’t reprimand the centurion for his humility, for acknowledging that his life was indeed unworthy of the perfect presence of God. On the contrary, Jesus was pleased with his reverence for Him. The centurion realized immediately that Jesus was holy, that He deserved special treatment.
We can’t let our shame keep us from coming to God.
We all have dirty homes, dirty lives in His eyes. He already knows. He wants us to come to Him in our sin, acknowledge that we desperately need Him.
No one else can do what He does or heal like He does. No one can mend what is broken the way the Creator of the Universe can. Let Him see your dirty laundry. Invite Him in!
Prayer
Dear Jesus, Please fill my home with Your presence. I never want You to leave. I know I am not worthy, but am grateful for Your grace. Please help erase any unbelief I still harbor. In Your name I pray, Amen.
Reflection
What would I do if Jesus had dinner with my family? What would I be most concerned about Him seeing? I will tell Him and let Him help me fix it.
