Most certainly I tell you, he who receives whomever I send, receives me; and he who receives me, receives him who sent me.
–John 13:20
The thirteenth chapter of John opens up on the eve of the Passover Festival.
Jesus knew His final hours were approaching. In an act of love, He humbled Himself and washed the feet of His disciples. Although He should have been served as their Leader and Master, Jesus served others and set an example of brotherly love.
At that moment, they put their differences aside and fellowshipped with one another.
Jesus knew Judas was going to betray him, Peter was going to deny Him, and the remaining disciples were going to desert Him. This foreknowledge did not impede Jesus from showcasing His undying love for humanity.
As children of God, we are called to follow in the footsteps of Jesus.
In today’s verse, we are encouraged to love fellow believers without exception. When we accept those who follow Christ, we are also accepting Christ. In doing so, we exemplify His heart of humility and love.
Jesus is calling us to love unconditionally and to serve with sincerity, despite the differences that exist among us as believers — just as He did so long ago.
Jesus invites us to live a life of acceptance with no exceptions because, in the household of faith, brotherly love is at the heart of Christianity.
Prayer
Almighty God, Help me to represent You to others in such a way that Christ will be glorified and hearts will be drawn to Your matchless love. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
Reflection
How can I show the love of Christ to other Christians?
