Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
–1 Peter 1:3
John Calvin mentions that 1 Peter starts with a description of our living hope so we may “enjoy the invaluable treasure of a future life; and also, that we may not be broken down by present troubles, but patiently endure them, being satisfied with eternal happiness.”
This living hope helps us stand firm when we are in trouble; knowing that our ultimate reward is coming.
It is also the foundation of our faith in the resurrection of Jesus from the dead (verse 3). His resurrection gives us an unshakable conviction that our hope is not in vain. And it vindicates Him as the Lord of creation who will make all things new (Revelation 21:5).
We will gain our inheritance of this living hope when we see Jesus face to face and it will be ours forever.
Make sure you take time each and every day to thank God for granting to us this living hope.
Prayer
Dear Lord, Thank You so much for the hope that comes from salvation through Jesus. Thank You for loving me in spite of my sin and for believing I am worth saving. Help me never lose sight of the precious gift of this hope and help me live each day with gratitude and expectation for it. I pray in the name of Jesus, Who is the living hope for us, Amen.
Reflection
How have I experienced the living hope? How has it helped me overcome my darkest challenges in life?
